Call to report offers to sell tobacco in wake of robbery

Police want to hear from anyone who has been offered or sold tobacco by members of the public after the armed robbery of a Dunedin service station on Monday.

Cash and cigarettes were stolen from Mobil Forbury by three men armed with a gun and a sword about 2.50am.

"Items of interest'' had also been located and positive lines of inquiry were being followed, a police media spokesman said.

CCTV footage was still being reviewed, he said.

Mobil Oil New Zealand spokeswoman Samantha Potts, speaking from Australia, said the company was assessing its security at the Hillside Rd station after the robbery, including whether doors might be locked and a prepay window put in place during night shifts.

"All of those things will be assessed,'' she said.

Information was still being sought by police on the whereabouts of the offenders, who wore dark clothing and covered their faces during the hold-up.

They were described as being in their 20s, one of short, solid build, and the other two, tall and of medium build, police said in a statement on Monday.
