'Over the moon' car found undamaged

A car stolen while a Dunedin man spent 30 seconds buying his daily newspaper, has been recovered.

Boilerman Bruce Currie finished his night shift at Gregg's coffee factory on Saturday morning and stopped at the Night ''n Day in Regent St to buy a copy of the Otago Daily Times .

He left the car running while he nipped into the shop just on 6am, only to come back and see his car heading off up the hill.

The car was found dumped in nearby Queen St early yesterday.

Mr Currie's wife, Lesley, said her husband regularly left his keys in the ignition when popping into buy the paper after his night shift.

It was the only vehicle the couple owned.

"It's pretty rotten. We feel violated,'' Mrs Currie said.

Mr Currie (62) was "gutted'' to come out and find the car gone but was "over the moon'' to have it back, undamaged, she said.

The only problem with the Toyota Corolla was a flat battery as the thieves left the headlights on and the keys in the ignition.

"It's a real blessing and we're really thankful,'' she said.

A police media spokeswoman said no arrests had been made yesterday in relation to the theft.
