CCTV footage examined after man sexually assaulted

Dunedin police are reviewing CCTV footage of a man dressed as a woman who committed a serious sexual assault early last Sunday in North Dunedin.

Police said the man, who was carrying a jacket and a handbag, attacked another man near the Captain Cook Hotel, on the corner of Albany and Great King Sts, and near the Rob Roy Dairy, on the corner of Albany and George Sts, about 5.30am on the day after the All Blacks test match.

The offender was described as being of medium to athletic build with long dark hair and was believed to be Maori or Polynesian.

The victim was wearing green trousers and a white top.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kallum Croudis said police were reviewing CCTV footage of the attacker but the resolution of the footage and the fact it was at night made that difficult.

The footage showed the victim and the attacker walking in the same direction from the Octagon along George St to where the attack took place.

Det Snr Sgt Croudis would not comment on whether the offender followed the victim as that was more than he knew based on the evidence at present.

Police were not investigating whether there was any link with the Rocky Horror Picture Show screening at the Regent on Saturday night - where people were encouraged to come dressed in character - but would ‘‘keep an open mind'' to any leads provided by the public.

Police wanted to speak to anyone who may have witnessed either the offender or the victim in the area of the Captain Cook Hotel and the Rob Roy Dairy between 5.30am and 6am.

Anyone with information could contact police 03 471 4800 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police also said they were following positive lines of inquiry into another violent attack in the central city on Sunday morning and believed an arrest was imminent.
