Access to Ocean Beach at St Clair has been closed as work to replace sand sausages continues, the Dunedin City Council says.

The access ramp from The Esplanade at St Clair to the beach is expected to remain closed for the remainder of July, council asset and commercial manager Tom Dyer says.

"The reason for the closure is due to the ongoing work in the area to install new sand sausages along about 200m of Ocean Beach dunes to protect them from erosion in heavy seas,'' he said.

Contractors had installed about 120m of the first layer of sausages.

Another 80m layer towards St Clair remains to be installed.

Fencing and signs were being set up to inform beach users of the closure, Mr Dyer said.

Access remained open at St Kilda Beach.
