Scout Barbour-Evans plans to run for the Dunedin mayoralty at the October elections.

The 21-year-old Otago Polytechnic human services student has already announced an intention to run as a councillor.

The Dunedin transgender activist said running for mayor was a tactical decision, as it was easier to run a campaign if you were running for both posts.

‘‘I care very deeply about equality, human rights, sustainability, accessible healthcareand education, and animal rights.

‘‘But as I'm getting older, it's more and more apparent to me that we need to work harder at looking after our little city, and make sure that at the same time we're looking after our future, too.''
