Delta response lacking - Calvert

Dunedin city councillor Hilary Calvert was scathing in her response over the way councillors came to a decision over the recovery of $13.3 million in bad debt.

"You would have not lent $10,000 to your brother-in-law with this information,'' Cr Calvert said after a decision over the debt owed to council-owned company Delta was made at a closed door meeting yesterday.

Her comments come as details about the decision, which relates to debt from infrastructure work Delta carried out for a Christchurch subdivision, remained under wraps yesterday.

Mayor Dave Cull said details about what was decided would be made public as soon as Dunedin City Holdings Ltd (DCHL), which oversees council-owned companies including Delta, implemented the decision.

Cr Calvert said the lack of information councillors were given at the meeting was "unbelievable'', after DCHL failed to provide answers to questions she asked in advance, including a request for a current valuation of the subdivision land and the "actual written deal that was proposed''.

Despite her concerns there was some relief that "at least it's over''.

Mr Cull did not share Cr Calvert's concerns about the information councillors were given.

"The vast majority of council were confident they had sufficient information and made a decision on that basis.

"It was a very long meeting. We had a very extensive report and a considerable number of questions were asked.

"So we certainly had plenty of information.''

Earlier in the public part of yesterday's council meeting, Cr Lee Vandervis repeated his concern that Delta chief executive Grady Cameron was not being made available to respond to questions ahead of the decision.

"I would like to know how it is that an employee of council, as [DCHL chairman Graham] Crombie is, can have the authority to tell us as decision-makers that we are not allowed to question the chief executive of Delta.''
