Brainstem stroke victim to speak

Former Dunedin woman Kate Adamson will speak at a Stroke Foundation event next week during her first visit to her New Zealand family since she had a brainstem stroke in 1995, aged 33.

Ms Adamson, who married an American and lives in California, is the daughter of Pinehill couple June and Robin Adamson, and had two small daughters at the time of her stroke.

She had locked-in syndrome, unable to swallow, talk or move anything but her eyes.

She could communicate only by blinking.

She was determined to survive and went on to tell her survival story in a book called Paralyzed but Not Powerless and has also become a motivational speaker.

At her speaking engagement at Community House in Moray Pl on Tuesday at 10am she is expected to meet and share experiences with Dunedin stroke survivor Warren Palmer, who had a similar stroke a year ago.
