Severe gale force gusts of up to 148kmh hit coastal Otago yesterday, making tough work for pedestrians and cutting power to homes in parts of Outram and surrounding areas for up to 90 minutes.
A cold front skirted past the coast yesterday afternoon bringing southwesterly gales, at times reaching severe levels about the hilltops and exposed areas of Clutha and Dunedin, the MetService said.
By early evening yesterday, gusts had reached severe gale level at 148kmh at Taiaroa Head, strong gale level of 89kmh at Dunedin airport, 78kmh in Gore and gale level of 69kmh in the city.
It also reached 50kmh in Oamaru and 54kmh in Wanaka.
Flights were unaffected at Dunedin International Airport.
