Measles outbreak spreads further

Another Dunedin child has contracted English measles, bringing the number of confirmed cases in Otago to 14 since the outbreak began in February.

Medical Officer of Health for Otago-Southland Dr John Holmes said the new case arose last weekend.

It did not involve a Logan Park High School pupil as three of the recent cases had, but a pupil from another undisclosed school.

Dr Holmes said the child had been away from school before becoming ill and other pupils were not considered at risk.

As with all of the recent cases, the latest case was linked to the original four which occurred in February in an unvaccinated family which had travelled to Vietnam in January.

Dr Holmes said it would be the end of the first week in April before it would be known if the outbreak was over.

The illness, which can be serious, although none of the cases in this outbreak have needed hospital treatment, is rare in New Zealand.

Dr Holmes has reminded parents to check their children's vaccinations were up to date.

Two vaccinations are administered, one at 15 months and another at four years.
