The Otago Regional Council has decided to withdraw from the Otago Stadium stakeholder group following its decision to part-fund the project.
It was now more appropriate for the group to include those involved with the construction and project management of the stadium, chairman Stephen Cairns told a full meeting of the council yesterday.
The stakeholders group is chaired by Justice John Hansen, of Christchurch, and also has representatives from the Dunedin City Council, University of Otago and Carisbrook Stadium Trust.
It was assembled last year to provide a more robust reporting system to the councils and to ensure their interests were maintained.
The regional council had only been involved in the stadium project as a "funder" and it had now confirmed that decision and had in place a timeline and schedule of payments to the project, he said.
However, the regional council would be notified if the stakeholder group identified any problems with the project that could affect its funding.
Councillors agreed to Mr Cairns' motion to email Dunedin City Council chief executive Jim Harland giving notice of the regional council's withdrawal.
