Euthanasia campaigner Dr Philip Nitschke will return to Dunedin next month as part of a nationwide tour where he plans to launch a controversial suicide-drug testing kit.

His first visit to Dunedin last year was marked by controversy following last-minute venue changes and the screening of an unclassified film showing how to end your life.

The man dubbed "Dr Death" by his detractors will hold a public lecture and workshop at Quality Cargills Hotel, Dunedin, on Wednesday, July 29, with further workshops in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Nelson.

Invercargill was also a possibility, he said.

Dr Nitschke said support in New Zealand was strong, with about 300 financial members of Exit International, the assisted suicide group he founded in 1997. He had not encountered any problems with booking venues for his latest tour.

He confirmed Exit International would launch the euthanasia-drug test kit, which enabled people to test suicide drugs to ensure they could work.

"[I'm] hoping there won't be the same trouble with Auckland/New Zealand Immigration and Customs - the kits should be OK to bring in."

Exit International Otago co-ordinator Paula Westoby said she hoped the visit would be as controversial as his last.

"It certainly helps with publicity," she said.

Ms Westoby earned the praise of Australian-based Dr Nitschke when she had the words "do not resuscitate" tattooed on her chest in December.

Her deeds earned her an invitation to speak to other right-to-die supporters in Newcastle, Australia last month.
