A 66-year-old Dunedin cyclist died after he collided head-on
with a four-wheel-drive vehicle near East Taieri yesterday.
The man was cycling north on State Highway 1 when he suddenly
veered into the southbound lane and was hit by a 4WD vehicle
at 3.05pm near the Gladfield Rd intersection, 4km south of
Mosgiel, Senior Sergeant Mel Aitken, of Dunedin, said.
The cyclist was Alan Richard Kerr, of Allanton, a retired
Presbyterian minister. He died at the scene.
The Rev Dr Kerr was minister of the Otago Peninsula parish,
which includes Andersons Bay, for 14 years and then at the
Knapdale-Waikaka parish.
Snr Sgt Aitken said the driver of the 4WD, the sole occupant,
was shaken but unhurt. Speed was not believed to be a factor.
State Highway 1 was closed at 3.20pm, reopening at 6.30pm.
Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Mosgiel
police.
