Library decision on hold until next year

A proposal to move the Dunedin Public Library to the former chief post office building in the Exchange will not be decided upon until next year.

Deputy mayor Syd Brown was asked yesterday about the progress of the plan.

He said consultants would be instructed to investigate issues such as the cost of construction and the requirements of tenants.

The Dunedin City Council confirmed in July it would investigate moving the library to the Exchange.

And it confirmed the council had signed a joint venture feasibility agreement with the owner of the building, South Canterbury Finance, to investigate the CPO's potential.

The chairman of the Otago Regional Council, Stephen Cairns, confirmed the building was also an option to house his council.

The ORC had shelved plans for a new headquarters on the waterfront.

Cr Brown said a report would go the city council's finance and strategy committee.

However, he expected that to be "well after Christmas".
