Social housing on agenda

The future of the Dunedin City Council's social housing will come under the spotlight today when a hearings committee considers public submissions on the matter.

The council review is tackling fundamental questions about the council's role in social housing, with an attempt to decide on issues such as whether ratepayers should subsidise the service and whether the council or the Government should provide it.

About 15 people are expected to speak to the committee comprising Crs Fliss Butcher, Syd Brown and Dave Cull; feedback has shown overwhelming support for the council to continue to provide social housing.

About 75% of 201 respondents who had answered questionnaires or made written submissions thought the council's break-even model of funding should remain in place.
