Sixty years of service to the Roman Catholic Church and community by Brother Graeme Donaldson were celebrated at a Mass of Thanksgiving in his honour in Dunedin at the weekend.

The Most Rev Colin Campbell, the Bishop of Dunedin, was the celebrant at the Mass, held at St Patrick's Basilica in Macandrew Rd on Saturday.

Br Donaldson also spoke at the Mass.

Long a school teacher and member of the Christian Brothers educational grouping, Br Donaldson has taught in many places, including in Australia, as well as at many schools in New Zealand, encompassing St Kevins College, Oamaru, and the former St Pauls High School, Dunedin, the latter in the 1970s.

More recently, he also served for many years in the prison chaplaincy at Dunedin Prison before retiring in 2008, and has worked at the St Vincent de Paul shop in South Dunedin.

In an interview yesterday, Emeritus Bishop Len Boyle paid tribute to Br Donaldson's extensive and lively contribution to the Church and community through teaching, his further educational work through the prison chaplaincy and in other roles.
