Dunedin South MP David Benson-Pope will not
be accepting an invitation to stand as the Aotearoa Legalise
Cannabis Party's (ALCP) electorate candidate at the next
election.
"Their judgement has obviously been impaired by their
recreational habits," he said when contacted.
ALCP spokesman Julian Crawford issued an email invitation to
the MP, through the media, formally inviting him to stand as
the party's Dunedin South candidate.
"We think Mr Benson-Pope would make a great addition to the
ALCP team at a time when the party is struggling to gain the
support of `middle' New Zealand.
"Mr Benson-Pope has previously won the seat with a
10,000-vote majority.
''Many thousands of South Dunedin constituents also use
cannabis.
''This is thought to work in Mr Benson-Pope's favour if he
accepts the nomination," Mr Crawford said.
Mr Benson-Pope, the three-term MP who was controversially not
selected as Labour's Dunedin South candidate to contest the
election, said he had not received the approach from the
ALCP.
If he did, it would be declined.
