Dr Clayton is one of several hundred patients who donate bone to the New Zealand Blood Service Tissue Bank in Dunedin each year from such hip surgery.
He had not given any thought to the matter until being asked about it before his surgery.
It was simply a matter of reading the material about it, giving consent and the relevant medical information and agreeing to have a follow-up blood test six months later.
He said although he had probably been present, during his working life, at operations where donated bone was used, he did not recall that.
His concentration would have been on his own part in the surgical procedure.
He was pleased that use could be made of the removed tip of his femur, which was successfully replaced by a prosthesis.
Dr Clayton said he would have no concerns about having donor bone himself either if that should ever prove necessary.
