Construction work is ready to begin in the next few days on
the new bridge over the Water of Leith that will carry State
Highway 88 past the new Forsyth Barr Stadium.
Dunedin City Council general manager city environment Tony
Avery said yesterday the first step would be to drive piles
for the bridge.
It is understood the large crane brought in to lift steel
sections of the stadium into place will also be used on the
bridge construction.
The stadium bypass follows the railway line from Frederick St
to the Leith and then veers back to Ravensbourne Rd near
Palmers quarry.
Mr Avery said the design had been finalised and funding had
been approved "up to a number".
However, the council was still waiting to confirm land
purchases.
"We've still got to get some land and that's well through the
negotiation process.
We haven't secured it yet."
The Otago Daily Times reported in May 2008 the route
of the bypass would pass through land owned by East Parry
Investments, of which hotelier Earl Hagaman was a director.
Other land required for the bypass was part of the land
package bought by the Carisbrook Stadium Trust.
An agreement was in place for the trust to sell it to the
council at the price at which it was purchased.
Other land was owned by OnTrack.
The bypass is part of a $34 million project to improve State
Highway 88 traffic flows around Otago Harbour from State
Highway 1 at Andersons Bay to Ravensbourne Rd.
