Oamaru-based Milligans Feeds has won a rural supply award for nutrition for the second consecutive year at the annual Farmlands awards evening.

The award was predominantly for the company's calf milk replacer and lamb milk replacer, all manufactured in Oamaru, and it was presented at a recent function at the Air Force Museum at Wigram in Christchurch.

Milligans Feeds is a subsidiary of Milligans Food Group, which began production in 1896, and now manufactures food ingredients, consumer food products and animal nutrition products, employing about 40 staff across the operation.

Managing director Bruce Paton was thrilled with the success, saying Farmlands - following its merger with CRT earlier this year- was one of the biggest rural supplies businesses in the country. To win the award two years in a row was ''quite an achievement'' for the production, sales and administration staff, he said.

It had been a ''huge year'' for Milligans Feeds which also did the blending and packing for Fonterra subsidiary NZAgbiz's products, including Ancalf, SupaCalf, Denkavit and Anlamb milk replacers for the South Island.

Milligans business had evolved around the dairy industry and its milk replacers were now sold throughout New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and some parts of Asia.

Farmlands category manager nutrition Peter Brown said Milligans had dealt with the co-operative for ''a number of years'' and produced a very good product.

The suppliers in each category at the awards were voted on by staff at the 80 stores throughout the country and it covered everything from service, reliability and quality to delivery and pricing.

Mr Brown estimated there would have been about 20 suppliers in the nutrition category, including some global brands.
