Alpine Origin Merino, the joint venture between Silver Fern Farms and the New Zealand Merino Company, has been recognised at the New Zealand Food Awards.

The company received the KPMG export innovation award for its branded Silere alpine origin merino meat.

Launched three years ago and initially prototyped in domestic markets, the product was now being exported to five markets - the United States, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates.

The markets were ''growing in the right direction'', Silver Fern Farms chief executive Keith Cooper said.

''Domestically, we are 28% above last season/year to date and internationally we are approaching a key window,'' Mr Cooper said.

China was expected to buy more aggressively for its winter period, sales were expected to gather momentum following a recent launch in the Middle East and Dubai, and it was also intended to continue to grow the market in the United States, he said.

NZM's recent annual report said sales of branded product had grown 95% by volume on the previous year and 104% by value.
