$70m damage bill for North Is flooding

Flooding that affected the western North Island earlier this year caused about $70 million worth of damage to up to 800 rural properties, the Ministry for Primary Industries says.

Hundreds of people had to be evacuated from flood-hit homes in  towns across Taranaki, Horowhenua, Manawatu, Rangitikei and Wanganui in June.

Ministry spokesman David Wansbrough said the greatest impact of the storm was on sheep and beef farms, due to landslides and damage to infrastructure.

"Around 460 sheep and beef farms were affected, some with significant levels of infrastructure damage and lost productive capacity. The on-farm economic impact to sheep and beef farms is estimated to total $57.6 million.

"Dairy farms were mainly impacted by silt from flooding, with an estimated on-farm economic impact of $6.4 million

"There was little damage overall to the horticultural sector with the on-farm crop losses estimated to total $1.2 million.

"The storm also damaged approximately 800-900 hectares of plantation forest area which we estimate will cost around $1.2 million to re-establish."

Mr Wansbrough said support is available and encouraged anyone in need of assistance to contact their local Rural Support Trust on 0800 787 254 or visit www.rural-support.org.nz.
