King's College in Auckland has attracted more attention for alcohol-fuelled issues after several students were suspended for drinking sake on a school trip to Japan.
The senior students were suspended for two days for breaking the school rules and sampling sake on a sightseeing trip.
Headmaster Bradley Fenner said there was no drunkenness but sampling sake was outside the school rules and the senior students were dealt with, the Weekend Herald reported today.
He said on the last night of the business and commerce trip they were given time to see local sights in Tokyo and went into a bar where they sampled the liquor.
One parent said at least nine students were suspended, but Mr Fenner would not confirm the numbers.
Mr Fenner said teenagers made mistakes from time to time but no harm was done.
The school was in the headlines earlier this year when student James Webster, 16, drank himself to death with a bottle of vodka.
