An urgent call for public help has been issued by police after a five-year-old girl was abducted from her home on Auckland's North Shore yesterday.

Cina Ma was playing on her bike outside her home in the new suburb of Harrowglen near Albany about 12.30pm yesterday when a masked man picked her up, bundled her into his car and sped off.

As she was being taken the little girl screamed in Chinese: 'Let me go, I don't know you,' but her screams were apparently not understood by neighbours.

Cina's eight-year-old cousin witnessed the abduction and had had been interviewed in the presence of his parents. Police said today they urgently needed information about the abduction which they say may have been planned.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kim Libby said they would like to hear from anyone who saw a silver coloured car in the vicinity of the girl's home in the 24 hours leading up to the abduction.

It is understood that Cina's parents were separated and she lived in the Corricvale Street house with her mother, her pre-school sister and an aunt.

Her grandmother and two other aunts lived directly across the street.

A police spokesman said that both parents were being interviewed.

The motive was not clear as no ransom had so far been received.

Airports have been put on full alert in case an attempt is made to take Cina out of the country.

Investigations are continuing into any background connections the family may have that could have prompted the abduction.

More details on the abduction are expected to be issued later this morning.
