Police find two journalists in no-go quake zone

Police are warning people to stay away from dangerous parts of quake-hit Christchurch, marked by cordons or emergency tape, after discovering two journalists standing in the rubble of a collapsed building.

Police found the pair on Papanui Road inside a no-go area marked by emergency tape.

The journalists acknowledged that knew they shouldn't be in the area and left when asked, police said.

The building was outside the official CBD cordon but emergency tape clearly indicated the building was a safety risk, police Superintendent Russell Gibson said.

"We fully accept that the media have a job to do and we are actively supporting this with regular media briefings, interview and photo opportunities and controlled access to restricted areas," he said.

"(However) any media found to be acting inappropriately or putting themselves in danger by entering areas that are clearly restricted or a safety hazard will have privileges, such as access to bus tours, revoked," he said.

Breaching the CBD cordon was a criminal offence, he said.
