
It urged residents to help organisations co-ordinating the earthquake recovery effort to minimise the risk of spreading diseases.
Civil Defence said residents should move bins with waste material in them from vacant households to the kerbside, and return them to the right houses when emptied.
Carpets, furniture or any other material coming out of damaged houses would not be picked up and should be disposed of at local transfer stations.
Normal kerbside recycling collection would continue but delays were possible, Civil Defence said.
Green organics bins and red rubbish bins would be collected across the city from Monday and human waste (solids only) could be put in the red bin but must be well wrapped in paper or plastic bags.
An increased effort to keep the city clean would help minimise the spread of disease and vermin, Civil Defence said.
