Report received on sex offender teacher

Minister of Education Hekia Parata says she has received an interim report into how a convicted sex offender obtained work as a school teacher.

Terito Henry Miki, 41, pleased guilty in April to seven charges of using a document for pecuniary advantage and four charges of breaching a supervision order.

Miki was convicted in 2004 of three counts of indecent assault and two of common assault on his 14-year-old nephew and was sentenced to two years in jail.

He used fake names and qualifications to get work in six schools and was arrested when a member of the public recognised him and realised he was driving a vanload of children.

He is due to be sentenced on May 18.

An inquiry into how he managed to train as a teacher and secure employment given a supervision order requiring him to have no contact with persons under 16 years of age was led by former Ombudsman Mel Smith.

A spokesman for Ms Parata said the report was being considered and could not say when it would be released publicly.

The investigation looked at how Miki created false identities to cheat the Teachers' Council registration process.

A second case of a sex offender working as a teacher had been added to the investigation.
