Elderly man's missing life-savings found in his house

The case of the Greymouth war veteran and the missing $23,000 has had a happy ending with police finding the money "extremely well secreted" at the 90-year-old's home.

Police appealed for help earlier today after the man withdrew his life savings in cash and then apparently lost it after going for a cup of tea in town.

"The man has then gone to a cafe for a cup of tea. His movements from there are unclear," police said in a statement.

Police this afternoon said they had located the missing money "extremely well secreted at the man's house" and it has now been deposited back into his bank account.

They had fielded calls from people all over the world offering to donate personal funds to the man.

"Thankfully we won't have to take anyone up on those generous offers of donations, but it is very heartening to see that level of good will," said Constable Deane Harbison.
