Auckland shooting victim named

Police have named the man shot dead in west Auckland this week.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the homicide of 29-year-old Daniel Fifita Turner, who died of a gunshot wound late on Tuesday night.

Mr Turner is believed to have been shot on Afton Pl, Ranui and then taken to hospital where he died of his injuries.

Waitakere police said today that a post mortem examination confirmed he died of a bullet wound "to the upper chest".

Yesterday police cordoned off an area of the cul-de-sac and guarded the crime scene.

There were at least 10 police cars in the small neighbourhood, and one officer at the scene held a large rifle near where children, seemingly oblivious to what was going on, played on the street.

Other small children leaned over their fence to watch forensic officers in blue suits collecting evidence two metres away from them.

Police have appealed for information from anyone in the neighbourhood who "heard or saw any recent suspicious activity".

Detective Inspector Bruce Scott said there were "a number of positive leads" and he was confident of "an early and conclusive outcome in this investigation".

Anyone with information should call Waitakere CIB on 09 839 0600 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
