Wellingtonians warned over travel disruption

Wellingtonians are being warned to expect ongoing traffic delays this week with many of the region's trains sidelined due to track damage.

Major disruptions to the the Hutt Valley and Wairarapa train lines, caused by last week's wild weather, would likely cause significant delays for road users in the evenings, KiwiRail and the Greater Wellington Regional Council said.

Tranz Metro Manager Scott Brooks said special services had been put in place to help affected commuters.

"We have as many buses as we can get, but the traffic congestion means it will take longer than usual for the buses to shuttle between Petone and Wellington.

"It would really help if people could stagger their travel, by either leaving home or work earlier than usual or delaying their travel to outside of peak times."

Buses have also replaced train services between Petone and Wellington due to track damage caused by last week's storm.
