Motorcyclists flown to hospital

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter flew two motorcyclists to Auckland Hospital yesterday after they hit a tractor while out on a Sunday ride.

A spokeswoman for the rescue helicopter organisation said a man and a woman in their 30s to mid-40s, were out on a Sunday morning motorcycle ride on State Highway 16 on the Kaipara Coast Highway when a tractor pulled out in front of them.

It was estimated they then hit the tractor at 80km/h, the spokeswoman said.

The male rider suffered a fractured femur and the female rider was checked for suspected head injuries as a precautionary measure.

The couple were fully conscious but in a lot of pain when they were dropped off at Auckland Hospital's emergency department, she said.
