Ship back in Bluff after ice stranding

The Akademik Shokalskiy has sailed into Bluff today.

The Russian vessel, which was stuck in thick Antarctic ice for two weeks, arrived into the town's port about 8am.

It left Bluff on December 8, and was retracing Sir Douglas Mawson's 1911 Antarctic expedition when it got wedged in ice about 3000km southwest of the town.

Six New Zealanders on board the ship were evacuated with other passengers on January 2 to a nearby ice breaker vessel which is taking them on to Australia.

A full inspection of the ship will be carried out by the Russian maritime authority.
