Cyclist killed in hit-and-run

The death of a cyclist in an apparent hit-and-run north of Auckland has prompted police to appeal for witnesses to come forward.

The 63-year-old man was found by motorists just after 5pm yesterday, lying on Weranui Rd, Wainui, near Upper Orewa Rd.

Members of the public attempted CPR but the man died at the scene. Police say it is too soon to confirm whether a vehicle was involved.

They want to speak to anyone who may have seen the cyclist riding in the area or who could provide further information.

The man was wearing a blue and orange cycling shirt, black cycling shorts, and a read and white helmet.

Anyone with information can call Constable Colin Nuttall on 09 481 0773. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
