Airport staff taken to hospital after inhaling fumes

Two Customs staff were taken to hospital after inhaling carpet cleaning fumes at Auckland Airport's international terminal this morning.

The incident, about 8am today, occurred after the carpet was cleaned at a Customs-run international departures area last night.

A St John ambulance spokesman confirmed 14 people had been assessed and two were taken to hospital with minor symptoms.

Auckland Airport spokeswoman Katie Moore said the Customs area was cordoned off after the smell was detected about 8am.

Those who suffered symptoms were all Customs staff and no passengers were affected.

There were four delays to departures as a result.

The affected area was expected to reopen about 10.15am.
