Teen cyclist injured in Tauranga

A teenage cyclist has been injured trying to avoid a turning car in Tauranga.

This morning a 13-year-old boy was taken to Tauranga Hospital after a crash on Courtney Rd.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing acting Senior Sergeant Nigel Ramsden said the boy was coming down the street's hill at speed with traffic passing him on the right.

A car then turned left into a driveway, in front of the cyclist.

To avoid collision, the cyclist turned and ended up crashing into a parked vehicle, hurting his shoulder, Mr Ramsden said.

"We've had a few of these recently where cyclists need to take extra care when cycling alongside the vehicle. People just don't see them."

Mr Ramsden said a 14-year-old collided with a car earlier this week in the same situation.

"The drivers of turning vehicles are as much to blame, if not more, because they should be checking."
