Medical chopper forced into emergency landing

A helicopter making a routine medical transfer made an emergency landing in a Canterbury paddock this morning.

The BK117 twin engine helicopter was transferring a 72-year-old intensive care patient from Ashburton Hospital to Christchurch Hospital.

Garden City Helicopters said an emergency light came on in the cockpit at 9.12am, causing the pilot to land heavily in a paddock near Springston.

The patient, pilot and medical staff on board were not injured.

The Civil Aviation Authority has been advised of the incident, and the helicopter is being examined by engineers this afternoon.
