Getaway driver find mud sticks

A motorist fleeing police got trapped when he tried to escape by driving over Auckland harbour's tidal sands.

The driver of the Mercedes evaded police on Karangahape Rd in central Auckland yesterday, before heading west and on to the beach at Westmere.

The pursuit began in the city about 2pm but was soon abandoned.

The police helicopter resumed the chase and tracked the car to the beach, Senior Sergeant Paul Housley said.

The driver and another man who was his passenger were then arrested.

"There's two males that have been picked up," Mr Housley said last night, adding that one would appear in court this morning.

"We are fortunate in Auckland that we have a helicopter."

Once the car became stuck, it was a relatively easy end to the chase for police, Mr Housley said.

"Other than a dry cleaning bill, that's not too bad."
