Death of baby girl investigated

An investigation has been launched into the death of a baby girl in Taranaki today.

The little girl was found unresponsive in a residential property in Hawera after emergency services were called to the address, police said.

"Paramedics tried to resuscitate the infant, but despite their efforts she was pronounced dead at the scene," police said.

A scene examination was under way at the property, and police officers were speaking to the infant's family.

Victim Support has already been brought in to help the family.

"At this stage we don't have a clear picture of the circumstances surrounding the baby's death, therefore we are treating it as unexplained at this stage," Detective Senior Sergeant Brent Matuku, officer in charge of the investigation, said.

A post mortem examination was scheduled for tomorrow, he said.

No further information was available at this stage.
