Police responding to a bomb threat at Victoria University's campus in Wellington have found nothing suspicious.

The Murphy Building was evacuated earlier today after a note threatening the detonation of a bomb in the building was discovered.

Police said they took such threats seriously and evacuated the building while a thorough search of the area was undertaken.

They confirmed shortly after 1.15pm that no suspicious items were found.

"Based on the information available, police are confident that any potential threat was localised to the Murphy Building,'' a police statement said.

"Investigations into identifying the person who made the threat will continue.

"Police would like to thank Victoria University staff, students and the public for their patience while we established that the area was safe.''

The public had been asked to avoid Kelburn Parade while police conducted their search.

The Wellington District crime squad was leading the criminal investigation.

The threat comes after an online post threatening a shooting at Otago University's campus in Dunedin today.
