A Flaxmere resident was left with a head injury following what police describe as a worrying and cowardly attack on an innocent victim.
Detective Stacey Bailey, of the Hawkes Bay CIB, said the victim disturbed an intruder at the rear of a Flaxmere property about 9pm on Saturday and was attacked by a man with a weapon.
"It is of real concern that this offender remains at large following this attack," Ms Bailey said. "There are a few clues to identify the man responsible."
The offender was described as a male Maori aged in his 20s with a number one hair cut. He was chanting in Maori both before and after the attack. He left the area in a silver "people mover" style vehicle.
Anyone who knows the man, or was in the vicinity of Flaxmere and Margate Aves near the time of the attack, should contact Det Bailey on 06 83 10700.
