Two seriously hurt in motorway crash

Two women have been seriously injured after a car crashed into a barrier and slid on to its side at an Auckland motorway junction.

Police and emergency services raced to the scene at 3.10am today to find the car carrying five people had lost control after colliding with a barrier on the Stanley St motorway where it splits into the western and northern routes.

After striking the concrete barrier, the car travelled on its side before tipping back on to its wheels.

One of the rear passengers suffered a head injury and was taken to Auckland Hospital.

Another passenger suffered a serious injury to an arm and was rushed to Middlemore Hospital.

The motorway on-ramp was closed for several hours while the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene but has since reopened.
