A 17-year-old girl has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after she was hit on a pedestrian crossing outside Kerikeri High School.
The incident has prompted police to remind motorists to be extra careful as children around Northland start returning back to school.
The accident occurred about 10am today as the teen was crossing Hone Heke Rd.
Police say she started crossing when a car heading towards Cobham Rd stopped. A car going in the other direction, however, failed to stop and hit her.
Her condition was described as serious when she was taken to Whangarei Hospital by St John.
Police said it was a reminder for drivers to be vigilant as children returned to school after the holidays, and to reduce speed around schools when children were present. Pedestrians also had to be cautious even though they had right of way on a crossing.
