The man and woman accused of killing a Taupo 3-year-old have pleaded guilty to manslaughter and ill-treating a child.

Tania Shailer (26) and 43-year-old David William Haerewa appeared in the High Court at Rotorua this morning before  Justice Lang.

The pair had previously pleaded not guilty to manslaughter, ill-treating a child and the murder of Moko Sayviah Rangitoheriri.

They were due to stand trial for murder today but instead lodged pleas to the lesser charges.

The public gallery was full of family members who sat silently crying.

Haerewa kept his head lowered throughout the court appearance, while Shailer stared straight ahead, showing little emotion.

The pair were remanded in custody and would be sentenced on June 27.
