17 new millionaires this year

For some lucky Kiwis winning Lotto is not just a dream, it's been the jaw-dropping reality for 17 new millionaires this year.

But while their new rich status sinks in, most winners have simply slipped their winning tickets in their wallets before cashing them in.

New figures from Lotto reveal more than 750 New Zealanders have become millionaires since Lotto began in 1987.

And it doesn't matter where you live or what sex you are, as neither island or gender appears to be luckier than the other.

So far this year 64% of Lotto's millionaires hailed from the North Island, but the biggest prize of $22.2 million was collecyed by an Ashburton couple in April.

About 56% of this year's million-dollar-plus winners were men, and 61% were married so had to share their takings with their other halves. And 71% had children to spend their winnings on too.

Lotto said all this year's winners planned use their new-found money to help their families.

And what's the first thing people do when they win big?

Treat themselves to a nice meal. Half of this year's millionaires headed for their favourite restaurants and one just went straight to McDonald's drive-through.

Lotto NZ corporate communications general manager Emilia Mazur said the statistics showed anyone could be the next millionaire.

"It doesn't matter who you are, where you live or what you do - every player has exactly the same chance of becoming our next big winner.

"After all, the one thing all this year's winners have in common is that they bought a ticket."

Lotto Powerball jackpots to $20 million on Wednesday night.
