Child severely burnt in 'fire incident'

A child is in a critical condition in hospital after sustaining severe burns in a fire incident last night.

Emergency services were called to a property in Te Kuiti at about 6.30pm.

St John said two ambulance vehicles were called to the scene and treated a person there.

The child was later taken to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.

The Fire Service was also called to the property, but did not attend a fire.

Northern fire communications shift manager, Daniel Nicholson, said a boy, whose age was not given, had suffered severe burns in some kind of "fire incident."

"It was a medical incident that came into us," he said.

"We attended to a child that was severely burnt. We're not sure how or why, just that we attended to him and handed him over to the ambulance."

Mr Nicholson said firefighters were required to carry out ventilation of the house, due to smoke.
