Seven hurt in Upper Hutt crash

Seven people have been injured - one critically - in a two-car crash north of Wellington this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene on State Highway 2 in Trentham, Upper Hutt, shortly before 1pm, Fire Service central communications shift manager David Meikle said.

A St John spokeswoman said seven people were receiving treatment. One was critically injured, two seriously, two received moderate injuries and two minor injuries.

Four ambulances were in attendance and a rescue helicopter was on its way.

Police said the road was closed between the Silverstream intersection and Gibbons St and there were likely to be significant delays as emergency services worked to clear the scene.

The police serious crash unit is investigating.

Meanwhile, a cyclist received minor injuries in a crash at the nearby Stokes Valley and Eastern Hutt roundabout.
