Tone of Parliament goes down a notch

Parliament today somehow managed to debate porn stars and sexy underwear while discussing a new tunnel in Auckland.

National's MP Tau Henare started it by pre-empting an interjection from Labour's Shane Jones - who was demoted over the expenses scandal where he paid for porn on the work credit card - by saying "how is Linda Lovelace these days?"

Amid laughter sparked by the reference to the Deep Throat porn star, Labour MP Trevor Mallard asked Speaker Lockwood Smith if the interjection could be repeated so he could hear it again.

Once the mirth died down, Cabinet Minister Steven Joyce stood to answer Mr Henare's question about the Victoria Park Tunnel.

His initial comment "good news" was greeted with unwarranted hilarity but MPs completely lost it when he followed up saying; "I visited the Victoria Secrets, sorry Victoria Park construction site this morning..."

Mr Joyce's reference to a saucy underwear company had everyone in stitches, and he struggled to finish answering the question.

The upshot was the tunnel would be finished in November, two months earlier than scheduled.
