A new opinion poll has shown MMP is the favoured voting system.
There will be a referendum at the 2011 election when voters will be asked whether they want to change to another system, and if they do there will be a list of alternatives to choose from.
If a majority want a change, there will be a run off referendum in 2014 between MMP and the option that was preferred in the first referendum.
But tonight's TV One poll showed there might not be a second referendum - 54 percent said they preferred MMP over any other system while 36 percent did not.
Previous polls have shown narrow majorities either way, but the trend has been growing support for MMP which was introduced in 1996.
