An 80 year old Japanese skier has died after collapsing at
Coronet Peak on Tuesday.
The male skier was part of the Sports Unity group which
visits Coronet Peak each season for ski race training. It is
believed he fell and possibly sustained a head injury at that
time. His helmet was undamaged and there was no immediate
evidence of injury.
According to eye witnesses, the man skied to the base of the
Rocky Gully T-bar following a 'soft fall'. He was found
sitting in the snow, obviously unwell. Ski patrol, a doctor
and a translator attended the man who was initially able to
communicate but became unresponsive.
The man was evacuated by helicopter to Dunedin where he died
yesterday evening.
The man was from Akita, Japan.
