Airport plans office space

Extra buildings could be put alongside the Wanaka Airport passenger terminal to accommodate the airport manager and for commercial activities.

Approval is being sought by the Queenstown Lakes District Council to move a building and toilet block with some interconnecting decking to near the Eagle Air-Air New Zealand passenger terminal.

The council took control of the airport's terminal facilities in the middle of last year when it bought the Aspiring Air lease and buildings for $220,000.

Wanaka Airport Management Committee chairman Leigh Overton said the portacom building was already at the airport because it previously housed the airport cafe, which had since closed.

The committee had bought the portacom building on behalf of the Queenstown Lakes District Council and hoped to move it and its toilet block closer to the main terminal building, most likely for use by airport manager Ralph Fegan, who works from a leased office space at the airport, and another airport operator.

"[Relocating the buildings] is saving on office rent ... and it gives us a bit of space for future expansion," Mr Overton said.

The relocation of the portacom and toilet block would be carried out in conjunction with a refurbishment of the passenger terminal.

At the terminal, the baggage-handling area would be upgraded, and the "below standard" toilets would be replaced.
