People willing to launch themselves into the frigid waters of Lake Wakatipu next week during the annual Birdman competition have until 5pm today to register.

The Birdman, one of the annual highlights of the Queenstown Winter Festival, will be held on Saturday, with the bravest of souls jumping from a jetty near Earnslaw Park in the hopes of gaining the most flight time before plunging into the water.

This year, four tickets to the sold-out Flight of the Conchords show on Sunday night are on offer to entrants. Festival director Simon Green said he was hoping the tickets would get people excited about entering and "take the chill off a little when they hit the icy waters".

'We've had some amazing entries over the last 10 years or so.

"We had the Orange Men from last year in the office last week and the word on the street is that the girls from Hush Spa are back, too, so there's bound to be some bikini action again this year."

The Birdman will begin at 1.30pm on Saturday, rounding off an action-packed day of events including the Golden Mile, Festival Parade and Family Fun Day.

Details about entering the Birdman competition can be found at www.winterfestival.co.nz
